يشهد قطاع محطات الوقود في المملكة العربية السعودية تغييرات جذرية نتيجة الأنظمة الجديدة المعمول بها والاستحواذ عليها من قبل مؤسسات أخرى تفرض معايير صارمة للحصول على ترخيص. وبالنسبة للكثير من محطات الوقود الصغيرة والتي تعود ملكيتها لأفراد، فإن الامتثال لهذه الأنظمة أصبح مستحيلاً، وتوجب على مالكيها الانضمام إلى مؤسسات كبيرة أو الإغلاق. كما تسببت عمليات الاندماج إلى طمس هويتها المعمارية لصالح المعايير الموحدة للشركات الكبيرة. وبينما تختفي هذه المحطات تدريجياً تبقى محطات أخرى تحمل تصميم العلامات التجارية للشركات النفطية، مما يؤدي إلى محو التراث المعماري المحلي.
كرّست ساعات طويلة لقيادة السيارة في أرجاء منطقة عسير باحثاً عن تصاميم مميزة لمحطات وقود لا تزال قائمة رغم موجة التحديث السائدة. وفهمت الدور الاجتماعي الذي تلعبه هذه المحطات في المجتمع المحلي. ومن خلال التعرّف على بعض الأشخاص والصور التي ترتبط بها المحطات الآخذة بالاختفاء، فهِمتُ أهمية توثيق السرديات التاريخية المرتبطة بها.
'Waystations' documents the distinctive architectural aesthetics of gas stations in the Asir region, threatened with demolition due to accelerated developments in the sector.
The gas station sector in the Kingdom faces wholesale change as new regulations and corporate takeovers impose strict qualification standards. For many small stations, historically owned by individuals, independent operation has become impossible, and they are pushed to join largefranchises-mergers that lead to the loss oftheir characteristic designs in favor of standardized corporate aesthetics. As original structures are replaced with branded forecourts, a significant part of the region's vernacular architectural heritage is being erased.
Spending long hours driving throughout Asir to search for the distinctive designs that are still standing despite the steady wave of reform, I gained an understanding of their social role within different communities. Hearing people's memories and connections to these rapidly disappearing places, I understood the importance of documenting their histories.
نُفّذ هذا المشروع ضمن تكليف نظّمته هيئة الفنون البصرية في عسير، وتم عرضه لأول مرة في معرض جماعي بعنوان «عندما يهمس الضباب» في حي جميل بمدينة جدة في مايو 2025. 2025
This project was commissioned by the Visual Arts Commission in Asir and was first presented as part of the group exhibition “When the Fog Whispers” at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah in May 2025
كما عُرض لاحقًا ضمن معرض «جائزة المملكة للتصوير الفوتوغرافي عبر السنين» في دير سان غريغوريو بمدينة البندقية، إيطاليا، في سبتمبر
It was later presented at the “THE KINGDOM PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD OVER THE YEARS” exhibition at Abbazia San Gregorio in Venice, Italy, in September 2025
